Learn Modern Traditional Arabic "My family" عائلتى

Chapter two

Family

الوحدة الثانية

الأسرة

The first dialogue

الحوار الأول

The word هذه  means this and it used to indicate to a feminine word.

The word صورة means picture.

The word أسرة  means "family" and أسرتى my family, so the sentence :هذه صورة أسرتى this is a picture of my family.

We notice the demonstrative هذه rather than هذا  and we said that هذه  is used with feminine words , but هذا is used with mescaline words or persons.

The sentence ما شاء الله is an expression of liking or admiring something.

The sentence or the question من هذا means "who is this?"

The word   والد is the Arabic word for father and it is attached to the possessive pronoun ي which means "my", so والدى means "my father", and the sentence هذا والدى  means "this is my father"

The very common word of the word والد is أب  , so, we can say أبى which means also "my father" and it is most used than the word والدى

The word هو is a personal pronoun "he", مهندس  is "an engineer", the sentence "وهو مهندس means "and he is an engineer"

The question ومن هذه a question means "who is this?" but it indicates to female as the word هذه is a demonstrative with feminine words.

We have then the word والدة which means "mother" it has ة  which is used to transform the masculine word to feminine; so the word والد is "a father" and by adding ة it becomes والدة which means "mother" and it is attached with possessive pronoun ي but ة becomes ت so it becomes والدتى which means "my mother"

And of course there is another common synonym of the word والدة which is أم  which means "mother" and the word أمى means "my mother" as in English we  say "mother" and "mom"

The sentence هذا أخى this is my brother, and وهو طالب means "and he is a student"

The sentence هذا أختى means "this is my sister", and وهى معلمة  "and she is a teacher"

We should remember that معلم is a male teacher, and the word معلمة is a female teacher.

The word معلم  is equal to the word مدرس which we have studied in the previous chapter, and so the word مدرسة is equal to the word معلمة and they are both mean "a lady teacher"

The word جد means "grandfather" and جدى "my grandfather"

The word جدة means "grandmother" and جدتى "my grandmother"
