Family Members in Arabic
Family Members in Arabic
Concerning family members in Arabic we should notice important tips:
In English, we mean by the word "uncle", the father's brother or the mother's brother, but they are different in Arabic language as the father's brother is called عمّ whereas the mother's brother is called خال
We add the feminine closed Taa with two dots upon it ـة to make the word feminine or to make the noun feminine, so, the father's sister is called or named عمّة whereas the mother's sister is named or called خالة
The word "father" or "dad has also two meaning, it means والد and the term or the word والد is more formal. The other meaning of "father" is أبّ and it is more common or most used in Arabic or it is the informal term of the word والد. The feminine of the two words is made by adding the feminine taa (closed taa with two dots) ة , so mother or mom means والدة and أمّ and the word أمّ is widely or most used.
We notice that the feminine taa is either attached or not attached with the letter before it. If the letter before it is one of the following letters which are ا ، د ، ذ ، ر ، ز ، و it isn't attached with them, but it is attached with the other letters.
