The Meaning of Tanween and its purpose in Arabic and its Shapes In Qur'an

The Meaning of Tanween and its purpose in Arabic and its Shapes In Qur'an

Tanween, named Nunation in English, is a sign of two Fathah or two Dhammah or two Kasrah occurs at the end of certain nouns.

The word Tanween comes from the letter "noon", because pronouncing of tanween is like Noon Saakin.

From here we can say that tanween is to make pronunciation of the word end like "noon"

and we can say also that tanween is written as two fathah or two Dhammah or two kasrah and is pronounced as Noon saakin.

How can we write tanween and how can we pronounce it?

For example

The letter ت  with a short vowel will be

تَ تِ تُ

But if we double this short vowel it will be

تاَ تٍ تٌ

And we should notice that only in case of adding tanween with fatha, we need to add "alif" at the end of the word, if the word doesn't end with Alif

So how does this look with a real word

The word بيت which means a "house"

If we want to add tanween at the end to it

We should add ا at the end of it in case of tanween fathah

And for tanween kasrah and Dhamma we can just add it at the end of the word.

So بيت  becomes

بيتاً بيتٍ بيتٌ

What is the purpose of tanween?

There are so many reasons why we use tanween, but the major reason and the most common one is using tanween as an indefinite article.

Indefinite article in English is "a" or "an"

So, instead of using "a" and "an" in English, we use tanween in Arabic

So, we can translate "a house" in English too بيتاً

Or we can also translate it to

بيتٍ  or بيتٌ

And the type of tanween fathaah or Dhamma or Kasrah is concerned with Arabic grammar.

Let's have an example with tanween in an Arabic sentence

This sentence

بنيتُ بيتًا فى الصحراء

I built a house in the desert

And as we can see, the tanween of بيتًا which means house is to be seen in the translation of the sentence.

The shape of Tanween in Moshaf

Tanween has three shapes in the othmanic Moshaf.

And what controls of the shape tanween is the letter which occurs at the beginning of the next word after the word with tanween.

And every shape of tanween has a certain pronunciation, we'll learn in the tajweed rules of "noon saakin and tanween"

The first shape of tanween is like this

The second shape is like this

And the third shape is like this

So, to sum up what we have learned concerning tanween we can say

Tanween in Arabic is written like that

تنوين

And it means doubling the short vowel at the end of the word.

And it occurs or happens at the end of the word,

And the word that tanween occurs in its end should be "noun"

And it doesn't happens in all nouns in Arabic but in certain nouns and this thing is also concerned with Arabic grammar.

And when we find tanween at the end of the word, you should add "n" or "noon" to the pronunciation to the end of the word.

And, you must add ا  at the end of the word when you using tanween of fathah like تاً

And, the main purpose of using tanween as "indefinite article" as "a" or "an" in Engish.

And finally tanween has three different shapes in Othamaic Moshaf.

Thank you for watching and wish you great benefit.
