Arabic Course for Beginners | How to write and read "Alif" and "Hamza" letters of Arabic Alphabet

Arabic Alphabet Course

Assalamu Alaykum

My name is Mohamed

And I'm going to teach you the Arabic language.

Assalamu Alaykum السلام عليكم  means "Hello" or "Welcome" in English.

In this video I'll start from the very beginning; as this video is the first video in teaching الحروف العربية or Arabic Alphabet.

Before I start I want to say that my first or main aim to teach you Arabic alphabet or الحروف العربية is to teach you how to read in the Holy Quran; this is my basic aim, the second aim is to teach you how to write Arabic language correctly; the third aim which is "how to speak and understand" Arabic language depends upon your efforts in learning more Arabic vocabulary.

My way in teaching Arabic alphabet in my videos is to introduce one Arabic letter or a group of two or three letters which are similar in shape or form.

So, the initial course in teaching Arabic alphabet is to teach you the name of Arabic letters and how to pronounce them by matching the sound of the letter with a similar sound in English language, and we should put in mind that there is a difference between the name of the letter and its sound, as in English the letter "H" its name is "itch" but, it is pronounced "h" as in "hello"

Another important thing we should put in mind when learning Arabic language that in Arabic writing, we write from right to left, not from left to right like English language or other famous languages.

So, we write Arabic letters like that:

أ ب ت ث

And we write Arabic words like that

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الحمد لله رب العالمين

After this very important introduction, we can start with the first letter in Arabic which is "Alif", its name is Allif and it is written like that:

ا

Alif, as we can see looks like "one number" in English or a straight line, and it is written from top to bottom.

Alif is pronounced as "a", so the sound of Alif is similar to the sound of "a" letter in English.

Alif comes with lam to form the sound ال which mean the definite article "the" in English.

For example, the word قمر means "a moon"

But the word القمر means "the moon"

Another example of alif in the middle of the word is the word فاز which mean won, the past form of win.

As we notice in writing alif that it is attached with the letter before it and it isn't attached with the letter after it.

After "Alif" we have "Hamza"

Hamza is written like that

ء

Hamza looks like C letter but it has a tail or a slash under it.

Or it looks like a non-complete circle with a tail.

Hamza is written sometimes on the line, or it is written upon letter, as it is written upon "Alif" which is considered a chair for it, that mean that "Alif" which carry "Hamza" letter is not pronounced, but the Hamza only is pronounced.

We write Hamaz upon Alif  or under it like that

أ

إ

We pronounce Hamza upon alif like short "a" as "apple"

We pronounce Hamza under alif like short "e" as "ear"

Notice the pronunciation of Hamza in the next Arabic words:

The Hamza upon alif as in the word أحمد which means an Arabic name.

And the Hamza under alif as in the word إبراهيم  which means also an Arabic name.

The Hamza on the line as in the word سماء which means sky

So, we have learned in this video the name of two letters which are "alif" and "Hamza" and how to read and write them.

We have reached to the end for our lesson today.

Assalamu Alaykum or good bye and see you in the next video.
